HPU Athletics During a Pandemic
HPU Athletics During a Pandemic
As a member of the High Point men's lacrosse team, I can assure you that HPU athletics look a lot different than years past. While it's starting to become more like previous years, it has been a bumpy road.
With every case of Covid-19 that affects a member of the HPU athletics teams it causes a halt on what the teams are able to do.
The biggest coming in the third week of school when around 20 members of the baseball team headed to quarantine. With all HPU teams sharing the same weight rooms, all teams were shut down for two weeks.
Coming back from that it looked like things were smooth sailing, but that came to abrupt end for the lacrosse team as 5 more kids tested positive delaying practice for another week.
What can they do? There really is no good answer. It is difficult on a college campus to keep such a large portion of the student body safe from the virus.
You can have student-athletes treated differently that other students. You can't bubble the athletes because they still have academic responsibilities. There really is not solution other than to ride out the highs and lows of this year and try to grow from it.
Regardless, the teams, coaches, and players still seam eager. The pandemic has not changed their mindsets.
If anything this may help these programs going forward. It has ignited these athletes love of the game and it looks like everyone is now excited to be back.
Hopefully HPU athletics are passed the tough times this year and can focus on moving forward.
What everyone has learned from this is that you never know what is coming and you have to expect the unexpected. This will hopefully translate well to the HPU athletics seasons in the spring.
