Thank God, Bill O'Brien is Finally Gone
Nobody really knows what in the world head coach/general manager of the Houston Texans Bill O'Brien was thinking when he traded away DeAndre Hopkins, one of the top wide receivers away to Arizona. Hopkins had placed himself as one of, if not the top receivers in the NFL. When the news broke that he had been traded for running back David Johnson and a second round pick, social media went crazy. Basically, Houston got a piece of fine china and a bag of chips in return for Hopkins.
O'Brien hasn't been the worst coach, *cough cough, Jeff Fisher, cough cough* but certainly hasn't proved himself either. Yes, he's led the Texans to several playoffs, won the division a couple times, but never a Super Bowl ring. With star quarterback Deshaun Watson at the helm, the Texans were looking like a major threat in the AFC, until they traded Hopkins.
In their first season without him, the receiver core includes Will Fuller V, who's a good deep threat guy, but not someone you could pin as a WR1. You've got Kenny Stills, an asset, but again, no WR1. Randall Cobb, who you would recognize his time in Green Bay, but he's gotten a little older and slower, and production hasn't impressed. Brandin Cooks has been tossed around teams like a hot potato, and never is given a chance to prove himself, but he's never been able to put up numbers like a WR1. Hopkins was their go to. And O'Brien, for whatever reason, decided to trade him for some snacks and the plates to eat them on.
This year, the Texans organization finally did what they should've done in the offseason. After an 0-4 start, they finally fired him. Fans, and even other teams fans have been waiting for this day. Memes have come and gone about O'Brien, and the day has finally come.
Bill O'Brien, we thank you. Not necessarily for your tenure, but instead for proving that trading your best player always ends badly.
