Contreversial Referee Makes History in Champions League

36-year-old French referee Stephanie Frappart will make history when she becomes the first female referee to officiate a Champions League match when Juventus plays Dynamo Kiev on Wednesday.

Frappart has been referring games since she was 13. She has been a pioneer in referring games in Europe, also being the first female referee to officiate in French Ligue 1 in 2019.

She most famously officiated the Super Cup between Chelsea and Liverpool, where she had some controversial calls. While the game on Wednesday is essentially meaningless in terms of qualification for the Champions League knockout stages, it is important for each to win in terms of Barcelona.

Frappart was also previously involved in the Women's World Cup, and believes all of these moments are important to push the boundaries for women in all sports.  She knows how important her platform is in showing that women are on the same level as their male counterparts, especially in her own career.
