Cub's Theo Esptein Steps Down as President of Operations
Theo Epstein, who has been the president of baseball operations for the Chicago Cubs since 2011, announced he was stepping down from the position on Tuesday. General manager Jed Hoyer is set to be promoted to this position for the upcoming season.
"It became really clear that we'd be facing some significant long-term decisions this winter, decisions with long-term impacts,'' Epstein said. "Those types of decisions are really best made by somebody who's going to be here for a long time, not just for one more year. ... Jed clearly is that person.''
Epstein had only one year left on his contract with the Cubs, having a great 9 years with the organization under his belt. He is now one of five executives to lead multiple organizations to title wins, having led Boston to wins in 2004 and 2007.
While rumours were circulating that he might be signed with the New York Mets or Philadelphia Phillies, Epstein released a letter on Tuesday squashing all of these saying, "Next summer will be my first in 30 years not clocking into work every day at a major league ballpark."
Hoyer now is ready to take over, having worked alongside Epstein for the past 17 years. The 2021 Major League Baseball season is set to begin on April 1.
