GOAT Talk? Trout Could Very Well Be the GOAT for MLB
Sports has always sparked controversy over who the Greatest of All Time is. LeBron, MJ, Kobe, Wilt for basketball. Brady, Manning, Montana, Sanders, Rice for football.
However, in the game of baseball, it’s hard to pin it down. Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Barry Bonds, Cy Young, Nolan Ryan, the list goes on and on.
What if I said that the greatest to ever play the game of baseball, was playing right now. And recently signed one of the largest contracts in sports history.
Mike Trout.
What if I said that statically, Trout really is. And eventually will end up in Cooperstown. The only thing holding him back, is a ring. Or lack thereof.
A ring can really give a player the extra push into baseball lore, or really any sport history legend. As great of a career as Trout has had, he’s never been able to make a deep playoff run with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In his short career, he’s won the MVP award three times.
Since his first full MLB season in 2012, Trout has never finished lower than fourth in the AL MVP voting. When he played only 114 games in 2017 due to an injury, he still finished fourth in the race.
To add to it, he’s never played a full season where he didn’t place at least second in the MVP voting, until this season due to COVID.
Since his rookie season in 2011, Trout has recorded an fWAR of 10.1 twice. In that same time span, there have been two other position players to do so in all of baseball.
Trout has also recorded at least 27 homers, 67 walks, and an on-base percentage of .377, a slugging percentage of .550, and an OPS of .939 in every. Single. Season. Of his career.
What’s insane. Is that he’s getting better. A number of his numbers have been increasing in the last few seasons, and he’s now entering the prime of his career being only 29 years old.
It's also not even just about the numbers. Let's forget about the stats for a second. Mike Trout also just as that aura around him. The kind that kids look up to, adults admire, and people respect. He's a quiet leader, going out and playing by example, all while having fun. He connects with people, with the fans. And that, right there, gives him an extra push as to why he will be the greatest baseball player.
We are able to watch one of the generational talents play. Let's take it all in, because these kind of players don't come around very often. Trout already is phenomenal, and will end up being one of the greatest ball players to ever walk this earth.
