More Barriers are Being Broken With the First Female GM in the MLB
The Miami Marlins have hired Kim Ng as their new GM. She becomes the first female in the history of Major League Baseball to hold this position. She is also the first Asian-American GM in MLB history.
She has previously served as the senior vice president of baseball operations, as well as assistant GM's for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. Her experience with these two successful teams brings a new perspective into the young core of the Miami Marlins team.
The Marlins surprised the baseball community by making the playoffs for the first time since 2003. Ng's arrival looks to the future for the Marlins, as they seem to be trending in the right direction for the success of the organization.
Ng will be the highest-ranking woman in baseball operations among the 30 teams, as well as the first female in any of the major mens sports in North America.
Marlin's CEO Derek Jeter said, "We look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins. Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role on our path toward sustained success. Additionally, her extensive work in expanding youth baseball and softball initiatives will enhance our efforts to grow the game among our local youth as we continue to make a positive impact on the South Florida community."
Ng is the fifth person to serve as the GM for the Marlins, succeeding Michael Hill, whom they did not bring back after the 2020 season.
She says that she is "humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve."
This is a big step forward for women in the sports world. Ng will look to continue the trend upwards for the Miami Marlins this upcoming season, and for women everywhere.
