University of Iowa Ex-players' Fighting for $20 Million

Eight University of Iowa players want $20 million dollars as compensation for the alleged racial discrimination they faced while playing for the universities football team. On top of that, they also wanted head coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive line coach Brian Ferentz and athletic director Gary Barca fired.

After further interviewing of the 8 players, and 111 more players, the results were anything but clear. After Black student athletes said they did not feel welcome because of racial slurs used by Chris Doyle, and son of the head coach Brian Ferentz abusing players, it was clear that there needed to be changes.

There were also bans to certain jewlery, hairstyles, tattoos, hats, etc. that specifically targeted the African American race and Black players on the team.

President of the university, Bruce Harreld, acknowledged the behavior that was occurring and used this as a learning opportunity to make the University of Iowa a more inclusive institution.

Carroll Reasoner, University of Iowas Vice President for legal affairs also said that there have been steps taken to make the university more inclusive and diverse since the football players attended the university. Listing out specific acts such as naming a former football player as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in athletics and another former player that heads a program that helps "improve the quality of the football climate." have been put into place.
