USWNT Makes Statement in the Netherlands
The U.S. Women's National Team made more than one statement in their 2-0 win against the Netherlands on Friday.
The entire team embraced the message written on their anthem jackets: Black Lives Matter. The team has been outspoken from the start about their beliefs, fighting against racial injustice in the country they are representing.
Ahead of the game, many of the players in the Netherlands posted a message to social media.
Megan Rapinoe, who was not in the Netherlands, has been an avid supporter from the start of this movement and support of Colin Kaepernick. She was one of the first to kneel during the anthem outside of the NFL and received heavy criticism for it. Following this, the U.S. soccer federation banned any form of protesting during the anthem.
And it seems as if they have changed their mind on this, as all of two players knelt during the anthem on Friday. Julie Ertz and Kelley O'Hara were the two that opted out, but not because they do not support the cause.
It is also important to note that ESPN did not show this on their showing of the game. However, it did go viral on the internet, so ESPN is the only one that looks bad in this instance.
